“Pidgin is a simplified means of linguistic communication and is not the native language of any speech community. Linguists do not typically consider pidgins full or complete language. A pidgin may be built from words and sounds from a multitude of languages.” [Wikipedia]
“Pidgin” is work reflecting the interweaving of the heart and mind narrated by the voice. Our thoughts transmitted by use of language are not always in balance with what our heart feels and vice versa. Our personal pidgin is oftentimes an attempt to find a common language and meaning between our hearts and minds using language as an intermediary.
As a former filmmaker, flipbooks were a way to convey ideas. Rolodexes, an old form of a contact list “flipbook”, reminded me of how people have come into and gone out of my life. It became a way to look back and reflect on life’s thoughts, feelings and experiences. In a sense, it is a biography written in a pidgin language. “Pidgin”’s movement goes through the birth, life, death cycle. The heart speeds up during birth progressing to the rhythms of life to finally death’s slowdown. David Held 2024
