The Phonemer

Posted by

This video will introduce you to what I call the Phonemer. It is like a drum machine, but rather than using instruments it uses phonemes as the sound source. A phoneme is the basic building block of speech. In the American English language there are 44 phonemes.

You can also increase  or decrease the number of beats in the loop by clicking the +1 or -1 buttons.

In this way you can create beats using speech phonemes.

On the left you have a list of 36 of the 44 phonemes. On the bottom are the controls. When you click on a box it will speak the phoneme on that row. If you wanted to say the word “sat”, you would click on the first cell in the ‘s’ row, the ‘a’ in the second row and the ‘t’ in the third row. You might have to increase or decrease the rate of speech by clicking on the +5 or -5 buttons in the beat per minute control.

Clear Board turns all the cells off. And reset will also reset the beat counters.
