Flag Study

Artist Statement

In working on a video about America’s conflicts, I documented the American flag in motion. The images were duplicated and mirrored, depicting the two factions in today’s politics. The mirroring effect adds an intriguing layer to the visuals, symbolizing the divided nature of the nation.

The stars on the blue field are absent from all the photos. The stars represent the unity and cohesion of the fifty states. Their absence highlights the current fractures that divide the nation, underscoring the challenges faced in finding common ground.

However, even while there are truly ugly events happening in the country, there is still the beauty of the ideal. The American flag, with its bold colors and simple yet powerful design, stands as a timeless symbol of the nation’s aspirations. It represents the pursuit of liberty, justice, and equality for all citizens. Amidst the turmoil and discord, the flag serves as a reminder of the shared values that underpin the American identity.

The beauty of the ideal inherent in the American flag encourages reflection and introspection. It prompts us to contemplate the significance of unity and diversity, reminding us that strength arises when we embrace our differences and work towards a common purpose. It serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that in the face of challenges, we can strive to create a better and more harmonious future together.

In the midst of conflicts and disagreements, it is essential to remember the aspirations that the American flag represents. It calls for dialogue and understanding, emphasizing the importance of embracing our shared humanity. By showcasing the contrasting sides of America’s political landscape, the images prompts viewers to reflect upon their own perspectives, bridging the gaps that divide us and fostering a sense of empathy.
